Birth positions

Birthing positions: from bath birth to the birthing stool

During your birth you can try several birthing positions to see what is the most comfortable position for you. What feels good can also differ from moment to moment. That is why we always encourage you to vary your position: in bed, on the birthing stool, squatting, on your hands and knees or in the bath. As long as you and your baby are doing well, you can decide how you want to give birth. In addition, regularly changing positions helps against the pain and the delivery takes less time. Sometimes we recommend a different position, for example if you have a lot of back pain or if pressing is not progressing enough.

Best birthing position

Research has shown that you feel less pain in a vertical position and therefore have less need for pain medication. The birth takes on average about an hour less than if you lie down a lot. You have more sense of control in a vertical position. Pushing is easier, hurts less and takes less time. A disadvantage of a vertical position during pushing is that you can experience more blood loss than with a lying birthing position.

Because of the advantages of a vertical position, it is wise not to lie down too quickly during childbirth. Do you still want to lie down because you are tired? Then try to lie on your side and, if necessary, support yourself with pillows in your back, under your stomach and between your knees.
